Customize Your Silicon Impregnator Application Methods

Different types of natural stone have unique properties, so restoration and protection methods will vary from one stone to the next. When it comes to silicon impregnators, here’s what you need to know to achieve the best results.

Natural Stone Finishes

Fred Hueston, Chief Technical Director of Surface Care Pros and owner of Stone Forensics explains, “You will need to apply more of a silicon impregnator to a honed stone than a polished stone. Honed and textured surfaces are more porous, since the pores of the stone are more open than a polished stone.”

Natural Stone Porosity

In addition to natural stone finishes, you must also consider the type of stone. Some stone is more porous than other stone. Hueston explains, “You will also discover that granite is more porous than marble and therefore will require more impregnator. The same rule applies for many limestones and sandstones.”

How Much Impregnator to Apply

Applying too little or too much impregnator can cause problems. Hueston says, “When applying impregnator to these materials, use enough until the stone is throughly saturated.” Be sure to wipe away any excess sealer after allowing ten minutes absorption time.
