Granite Graffiti Removal

There are several methods that can be used to remove spray paint from granite. Time is of the essence, the quicker you can remove the paint the less likely it will penetrate deeply into the stone.

If the stone is polished, try scraping the paint with a very sharp razor blade. If the spray paint dried quickly, chances are it can be removed by scraping.

Another method of granite graffiti removal is to wash the area with a mild detergent, warm water and a stiff nylon brush.

If neither of these two methods remove the graffiti then try cleaning the paint with a solvent such as acetone or mineral spirits.

If the stain is deep a poultice will be necessary. Make sure to test first and determine whether the chemicals may damage the stone or cause an undesirable color change. Poultice with diatomaceous earth and mineral spirits. Test several poultices using diatomaceous earth and one of the following solvents:

Test 1 - Mineral spirits

Test 2 - Toluene

Test 3 - Non-methylene chloride paint remover

Test 4 - Methylene chloride

When you remove the poultice, be sure the surface hasn’t changed color. Do not perform any testing during the winter months since cold temperature can cause the chemicals used to damage the stone.

Note: If the granite building is a historical property, contact a professional who has had experience with historical buildings.
