Tips for Silicon Impregnator Application

Tips for Silicon Impregnator Application

Proper silicon impregnator application is necessary for a variety of reasons. In this article, Fred Hueston, Chief Technical Director of Surface Care Pros and owner of Stone Forensics provides tips for silicon impregnator application, including how to avoid or remove a sticky residue.

Remember to follow any safety recommendations on the product label, such as proper ventilation and protective gear. Make sure the surface is free of dust, grit, contaminants, and coatings.

Tips From Fred Hueston

  1. The correct way to apply most impregnators is to distribute a *small amount evenly on the surface of the stone.
  2. Let the impregnator soak into the stone for about ten minutes.
  3. If it dries during this time, apply more.
  4. If there is any remaining after ten minutes, pick the remainder up with a dry towel.
  5. When complete, buff the stone with a soft white pad or a terry cloth towel.

*To provide the desired level of protection against discoloring agents and oils for a stone floor or surface, the appropriate amount of product must be applied. Check the manufacturer instructions for more details.

What Causes Sticky Residue

Let’s suppose that you follow the manufacturer instructions and Hueston’s tips, but you notice the floor feels sticky. Hueston says, “If there is a sticky film on the surface after you apply a silicon impregnator and you leave footprints as you go, you most likely applied too much sealer and did not properly remove the excess.

Sticky residue can be very problematic. It feels gross, attracts dirt and grime, and can create problems for care and maintenance. To remove it, Hueston suggests, “Wipe the floor with mineral spirits and dry buff the floor with a white pad or cloth.”
