Why are there water streaks on my granite?

Q.  Hi. I just had a question about being able to remove some water stains on a granite countertop. I worked in August on two tables, which are granite and the white, somewhat sparkly you know, on it. It seems like they were retaining the water streaks. And there's nothing that I've used so far that can remove them. Is there anything that you can tell me to do? I appreciate it. Thank you.

A.  If the granite streak and water stain problem is due to something on top of the granite like a coating or soap residue, then you can use a nylon pad to remove it. You can also try a very fine steel wool pad (0000# grade) and a marble polishing compound. To learn more, check out our free, downloadable Stone and Tile Care Guide . If the DIY methods we suggest do not work, then your granite probably needs to be professionally honed and polished. Your stone restoration contractor can do this for you.
