Changing the Color of Marble... Is This Possible?

Q. Can I change the color of my pink marble top? I have a coffee table with a pink marble top about 30 years old. Love the table, but pink top is outdated. Would like to change the color of the marble. Can this be done? Is pink a naturally occurring color in marble or has this marble been tinted? It is a polished marble.

A. Pink is a natural color in many marbles. It is nearly impossible to change the color of marble. However some white marbles have been dyed. If you try to dye pink marble, it will likely just darken. Dyes are hard to come by and most are only available overseas in Italy. If you dislike the color that much you might want to consider getting a new top or throw a table cloth over it.

Another idea you might take into consideration is that your marble top may need to be restored. You mentioned the table is 30 years old. When was the last time it was professionally refinished? Honing, polishing, and sealing can do wonders for dull, dirty-looking stone. Perhaps the true color of the marble is hidden under decades of wear.
