How can I prevent stains from occurring on my stone?

Q. How can I prevent stains from occurring on my stone?

A. If your stone is porous, it can absorb liquids. In this case, you will want to make sure to have it sealed properly with an impregnating sealer. Sealers for stone are designed to fill the pores to give you more time to clean up a spill to help prevent staining.

How do you know if your stone is porous? Spill some water on it and leave it for about 20-30 minutes, then wipe away the water. If a dark spot remains where the water was, then it is absorbent.

There are also several precautionary measures you can take:
  • Use coasters under drinks
  • Any spill should be cleaned as soon as possible.
  • Blot spills with a paper towel or clean rag. At this stage, it is important only to blot. Wiping a spill may spread it over a larger area, making a larger mess.
  • Use only cold water and a neutral cleaner.
  • Rinse the area several times
