How to Remove a Hair Dye Stain on Marble

Q. I have about a quarter size drop of some diluted hair coloring that is on my marble bathroom floor. What type of poultice mixture should I use?

A. Before you take the time to create a poultice, try cleaning the stain with acetone and a soft scrub brush or white cloth. Then, if that doesn't work, you can create a poultice using a solvent / mineral spirits and a dry ingredient, such as diatomaceous earth, flour, or poultice powder. For further instructions on creating and applying a poultice, including a How-To video, visit https://surphaces.com/stain-management-app/. If you see the stain lighten at all, that means the poultice is working. You can reapply again and again until the stain is completely gone. If you do not see improvement, the stain may be permanently set. Your professional stone restoration contractor may be able to hone the stone to remove the uppermost layer (and the stain) and then polish to match the finish of the surrounding stone, if the stain is only on the surface.
