How to Remove Sandstone Fireplace Caulk Stain

Q. I have a sandstone fireplace from the 80s; the previous owners had a fireplace screen door on it and they caulked around the door onto the stone. I removed the fireplace screen door and caulk, but it left a stain that I can't remove. I have used a tsp of vinegar, with no result. I even have tried a steel brush to remove some stone but no luck. HELP!

A. The answer to your problem is to mix a poultice with a strong solvent such as methylene chloride, an ingredient in paint stripper, to apply to the stain. You can purchase paint strippers that contain methylene chloride at any big box store or your local hardware store.
